Gear & Products for Black Soldier Fly Composting
I've tested dozens of breeding bins, attractant lures, and harvesting tools. Here are the ones I recommend based on real-world use.
🪰 Breeding Bins
Diy wooden frames, commercial plastic bins, and stackable systems — compare by capacity and larval migration design.
Gear🧪 Attractant Lures
Fermentation lures (yeast + sugar + water) and commercial fly attractants for drawing adult BSF to your bin.
Gear🪣 Harvesting Tools
Sieves, scoops, and collection trays for separating larvae from frass at the end of each cycle.
Gear🍽️ Feeding Supplies
Food waste containers, fermentation jars, and moisture meters for managing larval diet.
GearTroubleshooting Common Problems
If your BSF system is acting up, these are the most common issues and how to fix them.
- → No larvae appearing — attractant too weak, temperature below 70°F, or bin not exposed to adults
- → Too many larvae — reduce feeding rate or harvest frass more frequently
- → Unpleasant odor — food waste too wet, insufficient airflow, or larvae buried under surface layer

Quick Reference: Black Soldier Fly Basics
- Larval consumption rate:Can eat their body weight in waste per day (~5g/day per larva)
- Life cycle duration:Egg to adult: 4-6 weeks; larval stage: 10-14 days at optimal temperature
- Optimal temperature:75-90°F (24-32°C) for fastest growth; below 60°F larvae become inactive
- Frass NPK range:~3-1-2 to 5-2-3 depending on diet; rich in beneficial microbes and chitinase enzymes
- Adult lifespan:5-8 days (no mouthparts — they don't eat as adults, only breed)
