Let worms settle in
Leave your worms alone for 2โ3 days. They've been through a journey and need time to adjust to their new home. Resist the urge to check on them constantly!
๐ง
Check moisture levels
Squeeze a handful of bedding โ a few drops of water should appear. If too dry, mist with water. If too wet, add dry bedding.
๐
Observe worm behavior
Healthy worms will explore the surface at night and burrow during the day. If they're trying to escape, check moisture, temperature, and airflow.
๐
Start a small feeding schedule
On day 3โ4, offer soft scraps like banana peels or melon rinds. Only feed in one spot so you can track how fast they eat. Worms eat about half their weight per week.
๐ณ๏ธ
Bury food properly
Always bury food 2โ3 inches deep under the bedding. This prevents fruit flies, odors, and gives worms easy access.
โ
Know what to feed
Worms love: fruit & vegetable scraps, coffee grounds & filters, crushed eggshells, tea bags (no staples), and shredded paper. Variety is key!
โ
Know what to avoid
No meat, dairy, oily foods, citrus, onions, garlic, or spicy peppers. These create odors, attract pests, and harm your worms. Stick to plant-based scraps!
๐
Feed once a week
Stick to a weekly feeding routine. Rotate feeding spots around the bin. If food accumulates before it's eaten, you're overfeeding โ cut back.
๐ง
Maintain moisture
Check weekly. Add water with a spray bottle if dry, or mix in dry bedding if too wet. The wrung-out sponge rule never fails.
๐
Bury food scraps
Always cover fresh food with bedding. This prevents fruit flies, mites, and odors. A healthy bin should smell like fresh earth, not garbage!
๐
Trust your nose
A healthy bin smells earthy. If it smells rotten or sour, add dry bedding, stop feeding for a week, and mix gently to add airflow.
๐ฌ
Watch for reproduction
Happy worms reproduce! Look for small yellow cocoons (lemon-shaped) and tiny baby worms. This means your bin is thriving.
๐ง
Troubleshoot common issues
Fruit flies โ bury food deeper. Worms escaping โ check moisture, pH (add eggshells). Mold on food โ normal, just bury better. Smell โ add dry bedding, stop feeding.
