BSF Life Cycle: From Egg to Adult Fly

Understand the complete BSF life cycle — egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.

Egg Stage (3-5 Days)

Females lay 300-500 eggs in clusters of 10-40. They prefer to deposit them in crevices or under organic debris. Keep the area moist but not waterlogged.

Larval Stage (14-28 Days)

  • This is the feeding and growing phase — larvae consume up to their body weight in food waste per day
  • They grow from 3mm to about 20mm (roughly the size of a grain of rice to a small worm)

Pupal Stage (7-14 Days)

  1. Larvae stop eating and seek dry, dark places to pupate
  2. They turn from white to dark brown, then black as the exoskeleton hardens

Adult Stage (5-10 Days)

Adult BSF flies do not eat. They live only long enough to mate and lay eggs before dying. This is why a healthy breeding bin can sustain itself without constant re-stocking.
