How to Build a Black Soldier Fly Breeding Bin at Home
Build your own BSF breeding bin. Learn the setup, attract adult flies, and harvest nutrient-rich frass for your garden.
Bin Setup Requirements
I use a simple 5-gallon bucket with a mesh lid for my BSF breeding bin. Here is what you need:
- A container with drainage holes (bucket, tote, or dedicated BSF bin)
- Mesh screen on top to allow adult flies in but keep predators out
- A sloped ramp or cone inside for larvae to climb up and exit
Attracting Adult Flies
Adult BSF flies are attracted to fermenting organic matter. Place a small amount of overripe fruit or vegetable scraps near the bin entrance to draw them in for egg-laying.
Harvesting Frass
- Larvae naturally migrate upward when ready to pupate — collect them from the ramp area
- The remaining material (frass) is an incredibly rich fertilizer, high in nitrogen and beneficial microbes
Breeding Cycle Tips
- Add fresh food waste every 2-3 days to keep the colony active
- Maintain moisture — the bin should feel like a wrung-out sponge
- Keep in a warm spot (70-85°F) for fastest growth
