Tumbler Turning Schedule: How Often to Rotate for Fast Compost

How often should you turn a compost tumbler? Learn the optimal turning schedule for different seasons and decomposition stages.

Active Decomposition Phase (Weeks 1-3)

During the first few weeks, your tumbler is actively heating up. Turn it every 2-3 days to introduce oxygen and distribute heat evenly.

  • Rotate 5-8 full turns each session
  • Check temperature after turning — should be above 130°F in the center

Maturation Phase (Weeks 4-6)

Once temperatures drop below 100°F, reduce turning to once per week. The compost is finishing decomposition and needs less oxygen.

Seasonal Adjustments

  • Summer: Turn every 2 days — heat builds faster and microbes are more active.
  • Winter: Turn once per week — decomposition slows in cold weather.

How to Turn Properly

  1. Open the tumbler lid carefully (steam may escape)
  2. Rotate the drum 5-8 full turns using the handle
  3. Check that material is mixed evenly — no clumps of undecomposed waste
  4. Close the lid tightly to retain heat and moisture
