Tumbler Compost Moisture Control: How to Keep the Right Balance

Too wet or too dry? Learn how to control moisture in your compost tumbler for faster decomposition and odor-free results.

Ideal Moisture Level

Your tumbler compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge — damp to the touch but not dripping. The ideal moisture content is around 50-60%. If you squeeze a handful and only one drop of water comes out, that is about right.

Too Wet: Signs and Fixes

  • Signs: foul odor, slimy texture, liquid pooling at the bottom.
  • Fixes: add dry browns (shredded leaves, cardboard), turn more frequently to aerate, or leave the lid open for a day to let moisture escape.

Too Dry: Signs and Fixes

  • Signs: decomposition has stalled, material looks dusty or crumbly.
  • Fixes: add a small amount of water (spray bottle works well), or mix in wetter green materials like fruit scraps or coffee grounds.

Seasonal Adjustments

  • Summer: Tumblers dry out faster. Add water every few turns.
  • Winter: Moisture evaporates slowly. Reduce watering frequency to avoid waterlogging.
