Lasagna Compost for Weed Suppression: Smother Weeds Naturally
Use lasagna composting to smother weeds naturally. Learn how cardboard layers and thick organic mulch suppress weed growth without herbicides.
Cardboard as Weed Barrier
The foundation of any lasagna compost bed is a layer of plain cardboard (no glossy print, no tape). This acts as an impenetrable barrier that smothers existing weeds and grass below.
- Overlap sheets by at least 6 inches to prevent light from reaching weed crowns
- Wet the cardboard thoroughly before adding soil layers on top
Mulch Depth for Suppression
The thick organic mulch layers (straw, leaves, compost) built on top of the cardboard create a light-blocking blanket that prevents new weed seeds from germinating.
Handling Perennial Weeds
- For aggressive perennials like bindweed or quackgrass, add a second layer of cardboard on top of the first for extra insurance.
- Alternatively, smother the area with black plastic for 4-6 weeks before starting your lasagna bed.
Long-Term Benefits
A well-built lasagna compost bed can suppress weeds for an entire growing season. The rich, loose soil it produces also makes any remaining weeds easier to pull by hand.
