Lasagna Compost Layer Thickness: How Thick Should Each Layer Be?
How thick should each green and brown layer be in a lasagna compost bed? Learn the ideal thickness for fast decomposition.
Green Layer Thickness
Each green (nitrogen-rich) layer should be about 3-4 inches thick. This is roughly the thickness of a standard garden trowel scoop spread evenly across your bed.
Brown Layer Thickness
- Dry leaves: 4-6 inches thick (they compress significantly)
- Straw/hay: 3-4 inches thick
- Shredded cardboard: 2-3 inches thick
Total Bed Height
Your finished lasagna compost bed should be about 3-4 feet tall. This height ensures proper heat retention and microbial activity throughout the pile.
Layering Pattern
- Start with a soil layer (4 inches)
- Add green layer (3-4 inches), moisten well
- Add brown layer (4-6 inches), mist lightly
- Repeat greens-browns pattern until bed is 3-4 feet tall
- Top with a final brown layer and cover with soil or straw
Rule of thumb: For every 1 inch of green material, add at least 2 inches of brown material. This maintains the ideal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for decomposition.
