If your compost pile is not reaching the target temperature range of 130 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, one or more critical conditions are missing. Problem 1: Pile Is Too Small

Thermophilic bacteria are aerobic organisms that require oxygen to function. If your pile is compacted or wrapped in plastic without ventilation holes, oxygen cannot reach the interior and bacterial activity slows dramatically.

Solution: Turn the pile with a pitchfork or compost aerator tool to introduce fresh oxygen. If using a bin, ensure it has adequate ventilation holes on all sides. For open piles, mix in coarse browns like straw or small branches to create air channels.

Problem 5: Lack of Inoculant

A brand new pile may lack the bacterial population needed to generate heat quickly. Just as a sourdough starter needs time to activate, compost bacteria need an initial inoculum to get going.

Solution: Mix in some finished compost or garden soil from an existing healthy pile. This introduces thermophilic bacteria that can jumpstart the heating process within 24 to 48 hours.
