The success of a hot compost pile depends entirely on the materials you choose and how you balance them. Hot composting relies on thermophilic bacteria that generate heat as they break down organic matter. Getting the right mix of nitrogen-rich greens and carbon-rich browns is the key to reaching and maintaining temperatures between 130 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Greens: Nitrogen-Rich Materials

Greens provide the nitrogen that thermophilic bacteria need to multiply rapidly and generate heat. The more greens you add, the faster your pile heats up:

Fresh Grass Clippings

Freshly cut grass is one of the most effective green materials for hot composting. It has a high nitrogen content (about 2 to 3 percent) and breaks down quickly, generating significant heat within days. Apply grass clippings in thin layers no thicker than two inches to prevent matting.

Manure from Herbivores

Horse, cow, chicken, and rabbit manure are excellent nitrogen sources for hot compost piles. These materials contain high levels of decomposing bacteria that jumpstart the thermophilic process. Avoid manure from cats or dogs since it may contain parasites harmful to humans.

Kitchen Scraps

Fruit and vegetable waste, coffee grounds, and tea leaves all contribute nitrogen to your pile. Unlike worm bins, hot composting can handle larger quantities of kitchen scraps because the high temperatures break them down rapidly and kill weed seeds.

The Browns: Carbon-Rich Materials

Browns provide the carbon energy source that sustains bacterial activity over time. They also create air pockets that allow oxygen to reach the thermophilic bacteria deep inside the pile:

Dried Leaves

Fallen autumn leaves are a free, abundant brown material perfect for hot composting. Chop or shred them before adding to speed up decomposition. A single layer of whole leaves can mat together and block airflow, so always break them down first.

Straw and Hay

Straw provides excellent structure and aeration in hot compost piles. It breaks down more slowly than other browns, which helps maintain pile structure throughout the multi-week composting process. Hay is similar but may contain seeds that survive the composting heat.

Sawdust and Wood Shavings

Untreated wood sawdust is a dense carbon source that can help raise pile temperatures quickly. Use sparingly since too much sawdust can compact and restrict airflow. Mix it thoroughly with other browns for best results.
